Peter Hughes, Regional Secretary of Unite, said: “This is a groundbreaking agreement that will now serve as a benchmark for pay rates for flagship projects across the UK. The agreed wage rates at Hinkley Point will provide a significant boost to the local economy and generate much-needed skills gains and investments in the South West region through the project`s ambitious learning programme. EDF`s determination to negotiate an agreement was essential to ensure a satisfactory conclusion of wage negotiations. The new wage offer, which will apply to more than 1,000 construction workers, stipulates that Hinkley Point employees will receive 36 percent more than the minimum wage agreed by the construction industry and the Joint Council, which form the national civil engineering contract, and will have a 2.9 percent increase in the maximum gross wage over previous agreements. The salary increase will include a portion of previous bonuses in the employees` base salary. This means that vacation pay, overtime and pension contributions will also increase. A good handyman who works 48 hours a week would earn $45,000 a year before bonuses and allowances are awarded under the new collective agreement. We practice the superior form of CIJC WRA terms of employment called CESA – The Civil Engineering Agreement. The CESA agreement guarantees compensation packages for employees, including the agreement that ensures the project can attract the best people despite its distance from major cities. At peak times, we have more than 160 employees in the project.

The final wage offer, proposed by EDF Energy and Bylor, replaces a wage deal that was rejected by Unite and GMB members last month. Hinkley Point employees will also receive compensation for the period from January 1, 2017 to May 31, 2017. Since May 2017, a system of temporary bonuses has been put in place to mitigate potential union action. The system of provisional premiums entered into force from 1. From June 2017 to August 2017 under a previously approved Civil Engineering Sector Agreement (CES), which regulates payment and terms.
